Song of the Week! Dec. 1st – 7th

We move into December with a Bob Dylan throw back from 1973. It is Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door. Although originally by Dylan, this song has been covered by more than ten groups since it’s original release. Our version this weeks is the most famous of them all coming to you by the group Guns N’ Roses, released in 1992.

2nd Grade Second Semester Speaking Tests!

Hello everyone~ It’s that time of year again… time for the dreaded speaking tests. I know you are all anticipating this being the worst day of your life but with some preparation and practice, it doesn’t have to be! Let’s take a look at the topics, requirements, and grading rubric.

Lesson 6: Internet Etiquette Tell why good internet etiquette is important for students these days. Describe a situation you have had where being thoughtful online was important.
Lesson 7: A Special Event Explain about a special event that has happened or will happen. Tell the ‘5 W’s’ about it. Why is this event special or unique?
Lesson 9: My Hero Tell about your hero and what he/she did. Why do you like him/her? What hardships did he/she overcome to reach his/her goal?
Lesson 9: Volunteering Why is it important to volunteer? What have you done to volunteer? How did that experience make you feel?

REQUIREMENTS
First off, each student is required to choose only one subject to prepare and talk about. When preparing, you should create a written script of your speech that you will give in class. This needs to be typed in 굴림 font with the size being 10pt. It will be given to the teacher before your speech begins. You will then approach the podium and present your speech in its entirety. You should aim for your speech to be around 1 minute. There will be no penalty if you go +/- 5 seconds. You will be graded by the classroom teacher on three elements: task completion, logical writing development, and gesture. The native teacher will grade two elements: fluency and language use. You can see more specific requirements and a grading scale in the rubric below.

Song of the Week! Nov. 3rd – 9th

This week brings you a song that I have been wanting to have for the song of the week for a long time. It is ‘All of Me’ by John Legend. Such a wonderful song. However, the original music video for this song is a little to racy to play at school. So finally I have stumbled upon this version of the song with Lindsey Stirling.

John Roger Stephens (35), better known by his stage name John Legend, is an American singer-songwriter and actor. He has won nine Grammy Awards. Prior to the release of Legend’s debut album, his career gained momentum through a series of successful collaborations with multiple established artists. Legend added his voice to those of other artists, assisting in them reaching chart-topper hits. He lent his voice to Magnetic Man’s “Getting Nowhere,” Kanye West’s “All of the Lights”, on Slum Village’s “Selfish” and Dilated Peoples’ “This Way”. Other artists included Jay-Z’s “Encore”, and he sang backing vocals on Alicia Keys’ 2003 song “You Don’t Know My Name”, the Kanye West remix of Britney Spears’ “Me Against the Music”, and Fort Minor’s “High Road”. Legend played piano on Lauryn Hill’s “Everything Is Everything”. He has also gained chart topping hits from his solo work as well, including the Billboard Hot 100 number-one single, “All of Me”.

Lindsey Stirling (28) is an American violinist, dancer, performance artist, and composer. She presents choreographed violin performances, both live and in music videos found on her YouTube channel, Lindseystomp, which she introduced in 2007. In 2010, Stirling was a quarter-finalist on America’s Got Talent season five. Since 2010, Stirling has released two studio albums, an EP, and several singles. Her debut eponymous album was a commercial success in Europe, selling 200,000 copies in Germany, winning a platinum certification. Three other certifications were given to her by Austria, Switzerland and Poland. Her debut album was nominated for the 2014 Billboard Music Awards in the section of “Top Dance/Electronic Albums”.

She performs a variety of music styles, from classical to pop and hip-hop to electronic dance music. Aside from original work, her discography contains covers of songs by other musicians and various soundtracks. Stirling is also a YouTube sensation: her music video “Crystallize” finished as the eighth-most watched video of 2012, and her cover version of “Radioactive” with Pentatonix won Response of the Year in the first YouTube Music Awards in 2013. Lindsey has also sold more than 1 million singles worldwide and on May 2014 her second studio album Shatter Me peaked #2 at the Billboard 200. Her YouTube channel had, as of October 2014, more than 5.4 million subscribers and 735 million total views.

You can see her playing with another of our favorite groups, Pentatonix, on their collaboration ‘Radioactive’.

Hope you all enjoyed our song this week! Good luck on your finals third graders. I am sure you’ll all do great. See you next week for some more great music!

Grade 2 Lesson 9: A Teen Hero

Welcome back guys! Today I’ve got the first part of lesson 9 all set to go. I have made a Prezi for you to review the key phrases that you will find on pages 176-177. These are focusing on introductions of another person, place, or group. How can we talk about each one? What is important about them?

If you are having a hard time viewing the Prezi, click this link and it will bring you to the Prezi website directly. http://prezi.com/0zsue6lm2ptt/a-teen-hero/

There will also be homework after the first class. You will be able to find that below as soon as I can get it uploaded on here. It is a newspaper article about volunteering in Singapore. Read the article and answer three easy questions at the end. Make sure you turn it in on time. No late submissions will be accepted!

Grade 2 Lesson 8: What’s on Dokdo?

Hey everyone! Here’s your Lesson 8 PowerPoint as an introduction as well as the game we played in class just in case you would like to review. Hope you all enjoyed last week’s lesson. For the second half of the lesson there will not be a presentation to go with it as the concept is very easy for you to grasp and we just don’t have enough time. As always, if you have any questions, please ask anytime! See you in class.

Song of the Week! Oct. 27th – Nov. 2nd

Our next song comes to you by request once again… this time from Tuchong Kim. Linkin Park brings to your their single “Iridescent” from the Transformers: Dark of the Moon, released in September of 2010.

Here’s another song which the group contributed to another one of the Transformers soundtracks… I am sure many of you have heard it before.

Linkin Park is known for their rock style sound, even moving into metal music. However, this song would be considered to be on the lighter alternative side. The group has been playing together since 1996 with their most popular album being Hybrid Theory from 2000. Here’s a little sampling of my favorite song from that album.
